Beautycounter

If you have read my about page you already know that I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) about 10 years ago, but what’s more interesting is that I’ve spent the last few years making targeted life changes to try and improve my overall health and wellness, to live longer and more vibrantly, which has included my move to safer beauty.

Disclaimer: this is a bit of a novel, but worth reading! If you’d like to skip to my favorite Beautycounter products click here

How My Journey Began

Although I was diagnosed over a decade ago, my journey to wellness really started about three years ago when I went in for a routine MRI to track the progression of my disease. I got a call with results from my doctor, and when my doctor calls to give me results, I always know it isn’t good news. So my neurologist proceeded to tell me that I had new lesions, representing disease activity, and that it was time to consider new treatments. Ugh…I was just getting used to the current situation and really didn’t want to think about a new set of side effects and risks, because they all have them, and to be honest the next options in terms of treatments weren’t looking so appealing.

A couple years before this my brother-in-law had sent me a link to a Ted talk Dr. Terry Wahls did on the Paleo diet and her experience with reversing her MS primarily through diet. Anyway, it kind of always lingered in the back of my mind, and fueled by the results of my MRI, I decided it was time to take responsibility for my health. I changed my diet to eating Paleo, and from there, I have continued to delve into more ways to heal my body.

First It Was Food, Then It Was Home And Self-Care Products

Once my clean eating was in place (check!), I started to think about other things like household and self-care products. I transitioned to natural deodorant, and started buying safer cleaning products. The past year has been even more of a transition to safer, cleaner beauty products. For whatever reason, I was most reluctant to make this change. I had tried some “non-toxic” and “natural” products only to be dissatisfied and feel like I wasted money. That’s the worst! But…after about a year of trying to get pregnant and dealing with hormone imbalances, I decided that it was time to work on really reducing my exposure to toxins and endocrine disruptors in my beauty products.

Then Came Beautycounter

After being dissatisfied with other products, you can imagine that when I was introduced to Beautycounter I was skeptical,  but also desperate to avoid as many toxins as possible. Once I tried the charcoal bar and mask I was hooked! I still use both of those products regularly and have added to my collection and routine. Some of my favorites are detailed at the end of this post. (Skip to my favorite products)

While I hope major health issues haven’t prompted you to consider safer beauty products, I’ve found that they are often the catalyst for many people, like me. Regardless of your reasons, I am glad you are here and thinking about cleaning up your beauty routine. I think you will be impressed not only with the performance of Beautycounter products, but also with the company and our dedication to superior quality and transparency.

Your Skin Is Your Largest Organ

What you put on your skin does matter – your skin is your largest organ, and it is absorbent. Everyday, we use products – like our cosmetics, lotions, soaps, deodorants, shampoo, conditioner, etc. – that contain chemicals. While not all chemicals are bad, the toxic ones are, and unfortunately the U.S. beauty industry is one of the most unregulated industries, allowing many toxic chemicals into products we use daily, often not even realizing it.

Currently, the U.S. has only banned approximately 30 ingredients from being used in cosmetics. The European Union has banned over 1,400 ingredients, and Beautycounter now has over 1,500 ingredients they will never use. Check out the Beautycounter “NEVER” list. It is a great resource when buying beauty products.

I hope you are as excited about high performing and cleaner beauty and self-care products as I am!
