Why we love this easy homemade chipotle bbq sauce
- The thick and smoky sauce is perfect on ribs, chicken, pulled pork and more!
- It has some spice but it’s not too hot, just that perfect amount of smoky heat to kick things up a notch.
- It’s so simple to whip up in about 5 minutes! No simmering on the stove – just mix it all together and you’re good to go!
- We can adjust it easily to suit our tastes by adding more chipotle to spice it up, more maple syrup to sweeten it or more vinegar to make it tangy.

How to make homemade chipotle bbq sauce
Recipe testing notes
- Chipotle in adobo – When you chop up the peppers, they will release a lot of juice. Just expect this and use an appropriate cutting board.
- Maple syrup– After mixing, taste the sauce and add more maple syrup if you want it a little sweeter.
- Consistency – This sauce is definitely on the thick side. If you want to thin it out, you can add more liquid to suit your taste (water, vineger or maple syrup).
- Salt – We didn’t add any salt to this recipe as we felt it was balanced well with the tomato sauce and adobo peppers. If you want more of a salty-sweet sauce, you can add a little to suit your taste.
It’s perfect for chicken, ribs and more!
We originally made this sauce to slather on some chicken for grilling. It’s great for that.
It’s also the perfect sauce for some spicy ribs.
We have even used it as a sauce to add some spice to leftovers and as an addition to a simple stir fry like this easy chicken stir-fry.
We hope you love this recipe as much as we do!
