The Real Simple Good Life Roots – Food

This is the second post in a series of six where we are telling the story behind The Real Simple Good Life. We are outlining the core principles that guide our healthy lifestyle – what we call our roots. You can read the introduction to this series here.

Our roots are the core areas we want to explore, focus on and create content around to help you build the foundation to live better. The more you focus on these areas, the deeper your roots can grow, building the structure and support system to allow you to live better. Our roots are:

Why we chose food as one of our roots

The answer to this one is simple.

Food changed our lives.

Food improved our outlook on life and overall health. Eating real food increased our confidence and gave us the energy and outlook to chase our dreams and start this site. Our diet is the foundation of everything we have built since we quit our corporate jobs and decided to work on living The Real Simple Good Life.

Food also helps all of our other roots nourish and grow. Eating real food enhances your opportunities for growth in each area.

  • Movement – Real food gives you energy, helping to incorporate more movement into your life.
  • Mindset – Making changes to your food choices requires a mindset shift. Flexing your “mindset muscle” will make it more powerful.
  • Habits – Changing your food habits to healthier ones helps you understand that habits can be changed. You will then look for new opportunities to develop better habits.
  • Community – What you eat will always be part of your life and how you engage with family and friends. Eating healthier can help you better understand your current relationships and build healthy new ones.

How food can help you live better

A lot of people tell us that they want to make changes in their life and that they feel like they could be more. That they’re not living up to their potential, but they don’t know where to start. If that is you, we’d both tell you to start with food. We are living examples that changing the way you eat can truly change your life.

Now, you might be saying yeah, yeah. Eat better, feel better. It’s really so much more than that though. Food is our #1 brick to start building a healthier foundation. This is the root that sustains and helps all the other roots grow and thrive. You can’t think clearer, perform better and show up more genuinely when you don’t feel your best. And to feel your best, you have to dial in your eating. What you put into your body to nourish you and sustain your life force is crucial to helping your body to operate optimally.

A little tough love for you…if haven’t yet made any changes to your diet and food life, this isn’t an easy change. It actually might be the hardest change. But it’s also why we think it’s the best starting point. If you can master your eating and reap the rewards of feeling better, truly more vibrant, you will have the confidence to make other changes in your life to live better. So, we start with food.

Content we will develop to help this root grow

We will continue to develop delicious, real food based recipes for our website, that won’t be changing. In addition, we will be expanding our content to enhance it with the following:

  • More meal plans
  • Roundup posts
  • Longer form, educational/experience based posts (like this)
  • Real food reset challenges
  • Advice, tips and guidance for maintaining a real food diet

  • Different choices, like using olive oil for cooking, sweet potatoes instead of white potatoes, no pasta, natural sugar, as maple syrup and honey, almond butter my now favorite food.

    • Great! We do lots of those things with our recipes already. On the olive oil, we mostly try to use it only for dressings and cold recipes because it doesn’t have the highest smoke point so it’s not great for cooking with heat. Thanks for the ideas, and we hope you find some new favorite recipes on our site – we’ve got lots of really great ones coming this Fall/Winter!
